I downloaded the beta.
Its an MMORPG.
Is it fun? For me? Not really.
It's made using the unreal engine and unlike Vanguard, it actually seems to run good. It seemed to want to give a more interactive experience to the player. Meaning, you have "instances" or areas which only the player got to do action which was suited for you. But that could have just been the starting tutorial as I didn't get very far into it. Not much different than what EQ2 had when it was first released, where you had your own instance for quests.
The other thing is that you had to aim your weapon and dodge, was more interactive fighting system, more like what DarkFall is, or oblivion/elder scrolls. But very lacking compared to Oblivion.
The only other thing to mention is that they made this game have absolutely no reliance on gear. You got gear, but it was for display purposes only, no stats on any armor and such.
All your damage/abilities was based on your skills.
In other words. Its an MMORPG, you whack monsters, your character levels and gets better, and you move onto the next area and repeat for eternity.
Is it revolutionary? Absolutely not. Will it kill WoW or any other MMORPG? Nope. Is it interesting enough to gain a huge following? Nope... Is it fun to poke around with if its free? Maybe if you have nothing better to do.
It's better than Runes of Magic (free), its got good graphics and engine runs nice, but for $14.95 a month or whatever they are asking, they aren't going to get many to move over to it. It wasn't radically better/different than anything else out there. Seems basic and dumb downed, but that was my impression of the first 8 levels that I tried it.
FYI. I absolutely loved the original EQ1 and Asheron's Call which was considered Hard-core by today's standards, so Spellborn did not apply to me much.
