Hmm, should I even bother getting my monitor repaired?

I bought a Hitachi CM772 in Spring of 2001 for $400. On Monday of this last week, it stopped displaying anything (nothing, not even the on-screen menu or a "no connection" message). It is covered by a 5 year warranty, but I'm looking at it from a cost-benefit standpoint - if I ship it to Hitachi, I'm looking at $50 for shipping, plus another $50 just to find a box and appropriate padding to ship it with, plus the time of trying to figure it all out. I'm wondering if I'd just be better off buying a 17" LCD and getting it now, without worrying about turnaround time or dealing with them shipping it back to me if it is indeed not covered by the warranty.

Thoughts?

I think I decoded it...he's basically saying that CRTs only have half of their brightness after 20,000 hours of use. A new 19" monitor only costs $250, though they were $400 when he bought his.

I decoded that one like a g-doggg with a fly tip...flossin' wit da posse, cuttin' in da crib!!!

I'd look around for a monitor that's comparable, and check out it's price. If the price/performance is comparable to having it repaired, go new. If you're looking for packaging, find a place that just got a bunch of monitors and bum a box from thier dumpster. Small mom/pop computer stores and places like Circuit City probably have tons of packaging out back that'd work great.
