Edit: Thanks but uninstalling ATI Tray Tools did the trick for some reason, all back to normal now hehe

hi recently i have noticed the following : -

when i click a link to a webpage in an app, like MSN messenger for example, i seem to often get the message ''Internet explorer is running in compatibility mode....''.

practically all programs listed in start - > accessories are unuseable - for example, if i attempt to open a .txt file, i will get a egg timer for a split second, and nothing will happen ( no process appears in task mgr either). The same happens for all other apps under accessories, like Paint, and Narrator, :l and sound volume control.

i am not sure what i have done to cause these problems.. although recently i rearranged my desktop by creating sub folders and moving programs around ( no system files though i dont think!)

Any ideas? i am thinking of reinstalling windows, as it is sehr annoying, :p

I seem to remember putting shortcuts to things like notepad and character map in a folder on the desktop and they wouldn't work. Take them out of the folder (directly on the desktop) and they worked again. Not sure what causes this.

Sounds like there was some sort of mass compatibility mode change made to your machine...which I didn't think could be done.

Or, someone decided to play a very cruel joke on you while you left your machine unattended.

Try using the instructions here to reverse the situation. Start with something simple, such as Notepad.
