Hmm.. is this a good way to cheat sleeping a full 8 hours a day?

Yes I know everybody should get a full 8 hours of sleep at least. But let's be honest here. Who can actually get 8 hours+?? Well those of us who are in college and working that is. I remember hearing awhile back that a 30-60minute nap in the afternoon is equivalent to a full 3 hours of sleep at night. So say you sleep 5 hours a night and take an hour nap in the afternoon. In total you've only slept 6 hours but your body should feel as rested as a full 8 hours? Anyone want to elaborate?

It works... mostly. But nothing feels as good as getting enough sleep, period.

Why it works like that? It's all part of your brain's activity, and the amount of meletonin (hormone that causes you to become sleepy--which hits full scale during a lecture or reading).

That has never worked for me. If I attempt to take a 30-60 minute nap I wake up feeling like total crap.

Instead, I catch up on sleep on the weekends.

i don't know about 8 full hours of sleep. i sleep 6 hours and without my alarm clock i still would wake up. (which sucks cause i would love to sleep more) but i have to say an afternoon nap certainly helps you reenergize for the rest of the day. that's what i did when i first started college, a half an hour nap each day if possible just so i can stay awake at night :)

Heh, I never heard of that, but I do take naps in the afternoon. It usally like and hour nap, then I get like 3-5 hours of sleep at night. I think taking a nap plus good sources of caffine like Bawls are what keep me from going crazy from lack of sleep.

One time I tried taking a quick 30 minute "power nap" to recharge my batteries.

Woke up 3 hours later fully rested, drooling all over myself, and apparently I snored a little.

Needless to say no more naps for Ross @ work.

I dunno... I guess it would depend on how tired you really are. Sometimes when I take naps (in the middle of class ;) ) I wake up even more tired than I was before. :( But sometimes a power nap does refresh my energy

LOL, the exact same thing happens to me all the time. I go to do my hw and say ok, I'm gonna take a 1/2 an hour nap, and bingo all of a sudden it's been 3 hrs and i've been drooling

ROTFLMAO, that's so hilarious. It sucks, I can't just sleep and tell myself "ok Ross you're going to take a power nap and wake up fully refreshed 30 minutes from now". My body's like FSCK THAT, my body wakes when it wants to.

We just studied sleep in Psych class. Basically you sleep in 90 minute increments. It kinda looks like a sine wave with the amplitude getting smaller and smaller. It seems that in the first 2 cycles (3 hours) you get the most real sleep. After that you are getting less sleep per cycle. That may explain why I was able to survive HS getting only 3.5 hours of sleep per school night. Now that I'm in college I get a LOT more sleep and don't really feel any more awake during the day. :(

When I sleep in sitting position like a reclined car seat where I have done it the most. I feel a heck of a lot better than when I hit the bed.

yea just hold out till the weekend and sleep till 4. heh, Always helps me

Yeah...I totally agree...sadly. I goto sleep around 3am every week night, then on the weekends I go out and party and sleep till like 3pm the next day to catch up on all of the sleep that I missed.

On the weekdays I usually get around 7 hours sleep. On Friday I get tired around 4 pm. I take a little half hour nap and I'm fine. Sometimes I oversleep and sleep for like 2-3 hours. I don't really mind oversleeping though. :)

I like to get 7-7.5 hours sleep a night but never get less than 6. What works for me, honestly, is a cup of coffee in the morning. Yes, this is rather pathetic but to not be tired at all and wake up on my own accord I need 10 hours sleep (what I get on weekends - or long summers of bumming around) and clearly thats unreasonable.

I dont think you need 8 hrs of sleep everyday.
I get 4-5 hrs of sleep on weekdays and then i sleep about 10 hrs on friday and saturday nights.
So it almost averages out to 8/week, but you dont need 8hrs everyday.

Edit: BTW, i have tried to take naps during the day but i just cant fall asleep during the day.
And in case you are wondering, i am a college student.

Exactly how I feel. Although, I take naps anyway, since that's all I think about while I'm drifting off during my 8am math class.

I've actually heard that this is sort of unhealthy. You should be consistent in how many hours you sleep.

I've never taken naps because I always feel bad when I get up (with contacts it's way worse also!)

Instead, I just go to sleep on time :)
