I'm attempting to install win98 on a 400mhz celeron with 64mb of ram. I keep getting this error after the first reboot that the installation does and get this message after it reboots but doesn't make it to the continuing installation process:

"While initializing device VCACHE:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."

Any ideas?

Clean partition/HD? Has it been reformatted with the win98 boot floppy or a regular dos boot floppy before you've tried to install? Is there anything else on the HD?

Eeew. The only time I've seen that message before is when I'm overclocking too far. Make sure the CPU fan is seated right and apply thermal paste if you haven't used it yet. Also confirm that you are using the correct core voltage for the CPU.

In my experience Windows protection errors on boot have been exclusively caused by two factors: heat and not enough voltage for the speed I'm running at.

Of course, if you're not overclocking, your mileage may vary.

Good luck.

Found the culprit. Ladi, had it fdisked w/ win98 startup disk and fromated. I had bought a used stick of ram and when I removed it, the installation went fine. Odd cuz when I had it in before the reformat, windows saw it fine. Might be something wrong with the newly installed ram. I'll try putting it in again and see how it runs. Thanks guys for the suggestions, helped me to isolate the problem.
