I've got a job offer from a newspaper company. Basically I'd be what they call "pre press" something, in other words I just verify sizes and dimensions, page #'s, spelling mistakes in headlines, etc. before it's sent to the press. Starting salary is $12 an hour, not too shabby considering I'm 18 with no experience and have been applying at title companies/banks/etc. with no lucky whatsoever. The really bad part... it's a 5-midnight shift, including holidays. I dont really care about holidays but I'd like to know how people handle the night shifts.

My parents are very well off financially so any job I get is mostly strictly for application purposes for when I try to transfer out of my current JC to a business school in a couple of years. How will production responsibilities for a big newspaper impact my chances? The only thing i've usually heard about night shifts are that people do them when they need a second job to make ends meet, or if they are just a night person.

5 to midnight is nothing. The real question you need to ask yourself is how it will affect your schoolwork. I worked a night job last year during college that was Thursday and Saturday from 5:30 p.m. - 3:00 a.m. That was tough, but I didn't have class on Friday or Sunday (duh), so it worked out great and I had a lot of fun doing it (I did vehicle patrols for my school's DPS).

5-midnight doesnt sound too bad to me, although that doesnt leave much room for a social life

that's another part of the job that is sorta perfect. The job ends the same time the first semester of college ends for me, and my first semester classes have been really easy. I don't have school Tues/Thurs and only go to school 9-12 m/w/f. I probably dont' plan on working next semester as I'll be taking more classes and the difficulty will probably be harder as well.

The thing I guess I'm really looking for is, will this be helpful for college or for future jobs, and if so, how helpful?

I don't know how fun it would be... it's a lot of moving around and revolves heavily around deadlines and such so it probably wouldn't be the 'time of your life' atmosphere.
