Hmm, I was thinking about getting this but I'm not sure...

The dual layer burners are just becoming available, but the media is still really pricey and/or non-existent. If it were me, I would get a dual layer burner now and wait for media availablility to go up and price to go down.
By the way, dual layer means you can burn 8.5 GB onto a disc instead of 4.7 GB.
Look carefully if you want a dual layer drive. I think there are only a few out right now.
Sony has one that is really expensive and Benq has one that will be upgradeable with a firmware revision. I think NEC might have one out as well.

Dual layer is coming, but will cost a whole lot more than it should for the first 3-6 months (which will start in a few weeks :)). If you need DVD burning, get that NU 8x/8x, the Lite-on 8x/8x, or the Lite-on 8x/4x (cheaper). 4.38GB should hold you over a for a wee bit.
If your main use will be making copies of DVDs, then I'd say wait it out. Dual-layer will make that process about perfect.
For data, they will be nice, but DVDs have it over CDs now.

They are also bringing out 12x drives.
It might be worth waiting for 12x dual layer burners.

It won't become obsolete. Even if it does, you got it at a amazing price. An 8X dvd burner at $74??!!!

2 1/2 years ago I got my 12X CD burner at $150. Heh.

If you can hold off a little longer on the dual layer burner. For one thing, let dual layered media permiate the market a little bit more so the price per disc will come down. As well, I read in a review of the Sony burner that when burning the second layer, the burning process had to slow down to less than half the speed that it burned the first layer. Once both layers burn at 8x, that's when I'm in!
