So I'm messing around with this thing..and comparing the number of results you get on googlefight and on google, but they're inconsistent! =/

Not even..many are off by a couple hundred thousand, and the bigger ones are off by several million.

That just means that there is no official connection between the two (Google does not own them or something) or that Google sponsors them. That does NOT mean that the site couldn't be using Google.

Try doing some fights, and typing the same terms in Google..you'll get considerable different results.

But wouldn't you need their permission to use them?

http://www.google.com/apis/

They are allowed a number of automated queries per day if they use the Google Web API. They probably don't use the API, and instead simply do a http query, and scrape the values from the html. The legalities of this are probably a little gray.

The most likely reason why the numbers are not consistent is because Google has a huge number of servers, and they don't have the exact same data all the time. So depending on which machine handles your query, you may not get the same number.

Google's search results vary widely, around when they do their monthly sweep of the web. If you want extended (alot) of information check out the google news forum at http://www.webmasterworld.com

So for instance, one time you search you could return 1 million results, the next time 800k. (varies by what server your search gets assigned to)
