Hmm, FuseTalk idea. How about giving mods the ability to ban users from posting in one forum area *specifically*?

Was just thinking about how much better the Politics and News area would be if it was heavily moderated. A member who drops derogatory remarks towards other members instead of staying on topic could get one warning, and the next time simply barred from posting in that specific forum area for X number of days. The theory being if a member proves too immature to take part in that no-flames-allowed type of forum, they should have their posting privileges in it taken away temporarily until they grow up a little.

Implementation wise it would, yes, be a couple of new DB fields to add in per user - but nothing that hasn't been done on a smaller scale before (members probably have moderator yes/no flags built in to their DB profile already). Whatcha think?

Edit: Added stars around "specifically" in title. 🙂

Why? Zuni is a big fan of mine and reads all of my posts, or so I assume. 😛

I'm trying to think of a good DB implementation for this. I would think that a list of banned users per each forum that starts out empty and gets added to as mods ban people from that section would be the best way to do this when taking disk space into consideration. Hmm come to think of it, if there is a better way to imp this I'd like to hear how, just for the sake of being educated.

The easiest way would seem to be to enforce the present rule(s):
PERSONAL ATTACKS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED
That is basically the rule in all forums but I can see it enforced more forcefully in that forum to keep discussions on track.
I do like your idea though.

sully, you are now banned from my private thread!

😛

Couple of db fields per user? Nah, probably just another column added to the "ban" table that specifies which forum they're banned from, and then a person could have multiple bans, each for a different forum. Hm.. normal people see a banning discussion and I see a database discussion 😛

BTW yllus, dunno how much you know about db's exactly (I don't know a ton), but if you haven't already, you should read up on normalization. It's pretty neat stuff. 🙂 Basically for something like this where its a many-to-many relationship (many users, many forums), you would want a seperate table specifically for mapping bans to users and forums. This way you don't have any built in limits on how many users can be banned per forum, or how many forums a person can be banned from, etc. Scalability is the key 😉

WHY AreN'T the Forum Rules Enforced in War/ME?

The mods know about this "problem" . . . I just suggested a "time-out" instead of the current 2 week ban to get the offender out of the discussion immediately and give them a 'time-out' to cool down and think about the rules for a few hours . . . successive time-outs get longer until they are GONE.

I don't think your idea would be as effective since ANY emotionally charged subject - in GH or OT or Hot Deals - will be "crashed" by these same rude idiots . . . in other words, getting banned from one forum will just "move" them into another. 😉

*nod* See my second post regarding a many:many relationship suggestion. I actually do this stuff professionally on the side now! It's good money...

Well...Highly Technical and Politics/News are special cases to me. If someone is found unable to control their emotions in these forums, while that's not really worthy of an overall ban, kick their butts out for a week or two and let them try all of one more time to get it right. Only in the most explosive of threads (newly begun war, terrorist attack, Sox winning the Series) should there be leeway granted.

While OT's been a nearly daily visit for me for years, let's face it - it ain't close to what it used to be. I would hope that people with the desire to analyze and respond to arguments (taking the word in a literal sense) could migrate to Politics and exchange ideas with some level of common respect. Then again, this is the Intarweb. That may be just another myth destined for Snopes. 😛
