I used to own an Olympus digital camera and whenever I plugged it into my PC it would look like I plugged in a USB flash drive and I can not only copy photos from camera to PC but also from PC to camera.

Now with my new Canon A700 I plug it in and it gets a special camera icon on windows explorer (not a folder icon like my old camera) and it does not let my copy photos onto the camera. I would like to do this so that I can then plug my camera into my special photo printer and print the photos from the camera (it is such a hassle to try and print them through the PC onto this photo printer.. so easy via camera)

is there a way around this restriction?

Yeah I don't understand the problem here. Of course you can drag pictures over.

If dragging doesn't work, I know you can upload photos to the camera using their zipzoom software.

No it won't let me...

If I drag an image over the camera's location in windows explorer the cursor changes to a circle with a line through it and if I let go nothing happens. normally I can click and drag files over to folders this way and the cursor will be just some plus sign in a box.

or try to copy the images (CTRL + C) and then click the camera and go to the Edit menu the PAste option is greyed out. If I select anyf older though the Paste option is available.

It simply refuses to allow me to transfer files directly to my camera :(

It sounds like you are out of luck. Some cameras(most of the modern and civilized ones) emulate USB mass storage devices. Some need proprietary drivers, and some implement pictbridge or similar.

Damned if I know why some companies do stupid things like that; but I don't think there is a way around it.
