it just came to me... why dont we all chip in and get a banner ad on a website somewhere, and have it link to a recruitment page?

About Advertising on Slashdot
As much fun as editing and reading several hundred submissions a day is, the harsh reality is that, yes, we do like to eat occasionally. This, as you might have guessed, is the cause for those banner ads running at the top of your screen.
Slashdot's audience is one of the most technically savvy groups on the Web, with an enormous number of systems administrators, programmers, and others heavily involved in the information age. As well, we have a very large group of people who like to purchase the newest and greatest technologies, as well as looking for interesting things to do. The bottom line is that Slashdot readers tend to be smarter, wealthier, more attractive, and more involved with computers then almost most anywhere else on the Web.

The sale of Slashdot has affected the business way we're operating around here. As you can tell, the editorial style you've grown to love is intact, but in the interests of efficency hemos will be working with phasing through our prior advertisters.

For new advertisers, please go to Andover.Net to learn more about Slashdot's audience and ad rates. Or contact Linda Landry, linda@andover.net directly or by phone at 978-635-5300.

Train excellent idea!! : )

at the rate for most high traffic sites though, we might come out better just paying new members a $1000 or so.

find the web site you want and I will pay $50 toward buying an ad

This has been discussed before. It is a good idea - hell I've suggested this - but it would be expensive. Also, more importantly, Anandtech (like some other sites) dont have complete control over their advertising, the ads are run from an advertising companies server and placed on the Anandtech web-site.

I expect the price of these slots to be quite expensive, and only for short-term periods, which is why I think we should try and pursue other avenues of advertising, such as getting links on big sites. For example, I wonder how much interest would be achieved if we could get our logo on the Adaptec web-site for just a day :). Unlikely, as this is a bit too big a site, but I wish Anand would plaster a big f-off banner promoting RC5.

I don't want to p*ss in anybody's cheerios - ESPECIALLY Train's - since he's been one of the few that have been 100% supportive of recent ideas and tactics - BUT

I'm thoroughly convinced that the big win is not what we're after - we need to (broken record mode /.on)

Identify, communicate, motivate - our membership. I don't reject your idea Train - you're thinking outside the box. We still need to get these folks onto the forums where we can exchange ideas and motivations.

I'll look around for some alternatives to paying big bucks - I support the idea... as long as it's not our ONLY idea :)

c'mon guys im not talkin Yahoo here where we have to pay a $1,000 minumum per slot, i mean smaller sites, there are sites that get 50,000 hits a day and sell a month long ad slot for $100! Those are the sites we should target

Im gonna do a little more research, I'll get some quotes, post a list, then we can all vote on which one.

If you want to advertise as a button (such as the one on the top right
corner, 120x60 in size), or bottom banner, we're the ones to deal with.

We have packages of around 200,000 pageviews per slot. The bottom banner
goes for around $350 per 30 day slot (around 2.25CPM, while the top right
hand corner goes for around $1000 per 30 day slot (around 5CPM). We
guarantee 200,000 pageviews per slot, but you will probably see more than
that (around 225,000). I can accomodate one slot for the top button and one
slot for the bottom ads.

the larger banners on his site are thru another company,

Actually - I already have a Pay-pal account. I'm going to check to see if we need anything magical - or if I should just use mine...

If we are looking for a high traffic site...what about AnandTech.com? Maybe we could shame Anand into publishing an article about us. He can do some benchmarks to show how different systems perform with the varios DC projects. He could give some advice on BIOS tweaking to get the best performance out of each system. He would be doing what he enjoys and helping promote us at the same time. Besides we are helping get his name out as well!

JWM - I don't think anyone would gripe in the least about that - but, we're still going to put our money where our mouths are :)

If anyone out there (hint hint) has an "in" with Anand - time to put the screws to him. :)

Perhaps not screws, but a lil friendly persuasion might be in order.

well there already is a small banner on the Anandtech main page, and since most visitors are probably already members, a banner ad there is kinda redundant. but I would love to see hiim do an article on distributed computing, that would rock!

I could be wrong, but I imagine that the percentage of viewers on Anandtech's front page that are Team Anandtech members is not all that high.

Dan, yes I agree if we don't get out of our shell we will lose the battle.

I would not hessitate to contribute some cash into advertising our team - unfortunately last night my wife saw the total expense for my crack rack. I think I better lay low for a little while on expenses related to my hobby.

Buy her some flowers RC - that always works.

Explain how your obsession with this keeps you off of drugs, and out of violent crime - and that you are actually investing in her future by honing your skills. :)

OK - so it's lame, but it's the best I could do on short notice.

I did come up with a rebuttal that seemed fairly logical. I explained that if my hobby was fishing that a new bass boat would cost at least $20K.

Hmm, expanding on that 'shaming Anand' idea.

Anand has previously said many times that if somebody writes an article explaining not just RC5, but SETI and other projects (and it is of good enough quality) he will publish it.

I'm surprised that nobody has actually had a crack at it so far.... just think, and article on Anandtech with 'Written by: <yourname here>'
