Hmm, 6500 miles on my 2008 CRV and no oil change yet

I bought a 2008 Honda CRV a few months ago. The car has a "maintenance minder" which is supposed to inform me when the car needs maintenance (oil changes, etc). Im already at 6500 miles and the maintenance minder has not instructed me to get an oil change yet. My oil life reads 40%, and I have heard that when it reaches 15%, it will instruct me to get an oil change.

Just a bit concerned I suppose, because it's a new car.

I got a 2008 Accord and it has the same maintenance system. People on the Accord forum I visit say it'll get to ~8,000 before it tells you to get an oil change.

It will tell you well after you are overdue.

I went overdue about two times the length I should have. The light also eventually goes away too

It normally signals for other maintenance and not exactly the oil system.

(I drive a 2002 Civic)

Well, it depends on what kind of oil is used. Synthetic oils can go longer between changes without any problems.

Our 07 Odyssey has the same system, and I ignored it and changed the oil anyway at around 4K miles. Better safe than sorry was my view.

3000 miles is a waste on newer cars. Unless you live in death valley and autox every weekend. 5000-7500 miles is fine on conventional oil, depending on your driving style and climate. Change it when the computer tells you to, Honda knows what they're doing.

The oil companies are glad that the marketing worked on you. modern oils can go a LOOONG time without needing to be changed. Even on older cars i would go 6K before changing the oil. On my truck that I got in Jan. the oil minder just got to less than 10% and I've put over 7K miles on it.

Look at your owner's manual. It should give you the recommended maintenance intervals for all your fluid and filter changes. If you wait for the car to tell you, it might be too late.

Official interval Honda recommends is around 10k. Computer monitors engine performance, outside temperature, operation temperature, and operating condition, and adjusts this 10k.

Nothing to loss if you change earlier than that, but nothing to loss if you change when the computer says either.

Bought the wife an '07 Civic last July and it took until early May '08 to hit 20% on the "oil life remaining" indicator at 4,500 miles. Took it to the dealer and they were resistant to change the oil until 15% oil life remaining. I told them to change it anyway, which they did.

Her first change was free, the rest are on me. I'll never let it go that long ever again. If I were you (and I know that I'm not) I would have gotten the oil changed no later than 5,000 and for me that's beyond my confort level.

Good luck ...

Just never use a fram filter

Honda's filters are made by Fram.

The quality of your oil is not the only element to be considered in this equation, which is why I say full synthetic + 5k change interval + quality filter = win/win. Proper care of a motor will ensure that it will run pretty much the same in 200-300k miles. The rest of the vehicle may (and probably will) rot and fall apart, but it's damn sure easier to sell a running heap of junk than a non-running heap of junk.

I change mine every 5k with mobile 1 syn. My first change was at 1100 miles. Maybe I overdue it, but this is my first new car and at 44k miles it hasn't had a problem. 06 Mazda 3s.

From the factory no, the dealer yes.

But they are still junk and even more over priced when you put the word Honda on them.

This is true. :(

Well, mostly. For my civic (I think the CRV is different?), the FRAM oil filter is 15400-PLM-A02. The one to get is the 15400-PLM-A01, made by Filtech. The problem is that it's hard to find dealers who stock the A01 filters. I've had no experience with them, but this place has them listed.

More info here and here.

The toughguard series is actually pretty good according to filter comparisons.

I disagree. It still uses the cheap plastic pressure valve and has cheap paper endcaps. Why pay for that when you can get better filters for cheaper.

Go with the computer if available or otherwise the manual. Changing at 3k is like pissing money away, only suckers do it or people who do not know any better. I always defer to the manual.

That said, the first oil change may benefit from being done early, like a couple of thousand miles, and 6500 is well above that.

I go around 7500 on synthetic on one car, which is plenty often, and about 6k conventional on another--making sure to keep that in manual spec for warranty reasons. Many cars recommend far less frequent changes.

The factory fill has extra anti-wear additives (from the assembly lube) to provide additional wear protection during the break-in period. It should be left in until the oil life monitor calls for a service.

The Maintenance Minder in your CRV will vary service intervals depending on the severity of the service. I've seen service intervals as low as 2k to as high as 10k. There's nothing to be concerned about, just do the service (probably an A1) when the wrench appears and the display says 15% oil life remaining. Be sure to keep your tire pressure and oil level checked between services.

I didn't say there weren't better filters for less money, simply that Fram isn't as bad as everybody makes them out to be.

I prefer Purolators PureOne. Cheap and well made. I'm stocked up for the next 4 oil changes at 3.50 at piece.
