Hm, did I toast my CPU?

1. high % (90%+ is what i gathered) isopropyl alcohol. put finger in plastic baggie and gently rub old paste off

2. plug it in and try it?

what the hell is that a pic of in the second image?

The heatsink.

Also, I can't plug it in and try it till wensday when my new(to me) motherboard gets here.

im still trying to figure this out

first, in the first image of the cpu, it looks fine, 100% normal

in the second image of the heatsink, i have no idea what the hell your showing.......what kind of a heatsink is it?
that black thing looks like a thermal pad to me, in which case u need to take it off

OK, well then i would guess its a thermal pad of some sort, or its just there for looks

either way, i dont see the need for it, so try removing it

ooooh

I just started picking at it and it seems that it's not really black...

Its a really neat layer of paste that is covering a big silver layer

Now, do I re-paste the WHOLE THING now when i put it back on? or just the small square in the middle

just the small square in the middle, where the CPU touches the heatsink

Is 70% "Wintergreen" Isopropyl rubbing alcohol ok?

Or do i need 90+

U dont need 90%

i use 70% all the time, and it works fine, just dont start it up until 5 minutes after you clean it off (give it time to completely dry)

you can use 100% water if u want to, just as long as u let it dry completely, so 70% is fine

Don't use water. You need to get all the thermal pad off the cpu and the heatsink. That means all. The pad will leave traces in the tiny pores of the metal. They need to be cleaned off before you apply the thermal grease. Never put thermal grease such as Arctic Silver over a thermal pad, it will not work. Check out the Arctic Silver web site for info on cleaning. BTW, replacement thermal pads are available but they don't work as good as the original which is heat fused to the heatsink at the factory.

The alcohol diddnt help me much, I had to just scrape it off using my fingernail through a plasitc bag...

So, I just need to put a dab of thermal paste on there and set it on the CPU and i'm fine?

No need ofr replacement heat pads?

this was as clean as i got it

it probably didn't come off easy because it wasn't hot. you can just apply thermal paste on it... AS5 is the best imo. don't need any pads anymore

How do i go about heating it without a way to use it?

Hairdryer?

I need to get every spec of it off of the proc and heatsink or it won't work right?
