HL2 won't launch

I bought this a year or so ago and Steam pissed me off so bad I never got around to installing it. So, I finally decided I had the patience, installed it, Steam downloaded all it's updates for itself and HL2, decrypted the game files, etc.. HL2 now shows as 100 % ready in the steam window. However.... I try to launch it and the "Preparing to launch Half Life 2" window pops up, stays there for a second, then in the games window HL2 goes from 100 % ready to download 100% and then back to 100% ready. And then... nothing. Literally.

I've googled this and searched the forums here and came up with nothing. The steam support section turned up nothing helpful either. So, ideas?

Rig I'm running this on is as follows:

A64 3000+ @2.4
eVGA 133-K8-NF41-AX nForce 4 SLI board
eVGA 6600 GT @ stock speeds with the latest drivers
Win XP pro (no service packs installed right now. fresh install, haven't got there yet)

As random as it may sound, try copying everything from the Half-Life 2\bin folder to the Half-Life 2 folder. That's managed to fix just about every problem I've had with the game, including it not launching (but I didn't have that issue with the 100% ready thing).

Ok, I coppied (not cut and paste) the two DLL files from:

D:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\fastforward7\half-life 2\hl2\bin

to

D:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\fastforward7\half-life 2 which did nothing. I also tried the folder:

D:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\fastforward7\half-life 2\hl2 which did nothing either

Are those the files you were talking about? I hope not because that did nothing 😛 Any other ideas?

Well, I meant EVERYTHING from that folder (/bin), not necessarily just two .dll's, but yes, that was the folder :x.
