If it has gone gold by now, it wouldn't be 2 months till it's release. For your regular average game, it will go gold 2 weeks before it's scheduled release date. For AAA titles, it will go gold 3 to 4 weeks before hitting retail, so that the publisher has time to crank out enough copies to satisfy demand (i.e. Madden, Doom 3, etc.)

Now I know HL2 is going to be huge, but they do not need 2 months to put together a few boxes for retail. I'm looking for it to go gold within the next 2 weeks (next week possibly), and ship around the beginning of November.

Ripped from Gamespots website

Valve readying Half-Life 2 bundles; Counter-Strike: Source available next week

Regular and Collector's Editions to be available at retail; Gold, Silver, and Bronze packages to be pumped via Steam.

Once again, the press-release-adverse Gabe Newell has used hlfallout.net to reveal new details about Half-Life 2. In a posting to the site, Newell revealed that there will be no less than five different Half-Life 2 packages. Two will be the retail versions: a standard edition that will contain the game on six CDs, as well as its multiplayer version, Counter-Strike: Source. The standard edition will also have three different characters--hero Gordon Freeman, heroine Alyx, and the sinister G-man--on different versions of the box.

The second retail version, the Collector's Edition, will come with Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life 1: Source, a remake of the original game with Valve's new engine. The Collector's Edition will also be on a single DVD and be bundled with a Half-Life 2 T-shirt and a Prima strategy-guide sampler.

The other three Half-Life 2 packages will be available directly from Valve via its Steam download service. The "Bronze" package will include Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source. The "Silver" bundle will get purchasers Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source, Day of Defeat: Source (another classic-game remake), and "Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam."

The "Gold" package offers even more features. It will get you Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Valve's back catalog on Steam, a complete Prima strategy guide, three different Half-Life 2 posters, a Half-Life 2 hat, a Half-Life 2 postcard, Half-Life 2 stickers, and a Half-Life 2 soundtrack CD. One out of every 5,000 "Gold"-package purchasers will also win a trip to Valve's studios.

However, with the release date of Half-Life 2 still in limbo, Valve is offering a big incentive with its Steam packages, which will go on sale next week. "Those who purchase via Steam will receive the final version of Counter-Strike: Source immediately," read Newell's posting. This means that while the single-player campaign of Half-Life 2 might not be available for months, the full multiplayer component (which has been available in beta form) will be sparking LAN battles next week.

this sucks
I definetly want the retail since I dont trust steam at all,
I realy want to get a dvd version since I hate swapping cd's
That means I must get the collectors edition which is ok I guess except it will have a tshirt and a strategy guide which is just pointless for me, getting hl1 source is nice though.
I will then presumingly be missing out of day of defeat source, and if valve think they are going to start to sell addons that were previosly free I will be surprised.

Does anyone have an idea (or know for that matter) as to whether or not you can burn the game data to dvd for installs later on if need be (ahem, reformatting anyone?) if purchased and downloaded through Steam? If you can't do that at all, that would seriously suck and probly push very hard towards me purchasing the Collector's Edition instead of chancing downloading multiple gigs of data whenever I reformat xp. I really like what all's included with the Gold package though, and I'm leaning towards it right now... my guess is it'll cost ~$85 (I originally was thinking $100, but that would be ridiculous for what you're getting).

Re: lead times - As soon as they have an RC, if not before, they've got all the printed materials done - boxes, manuals, jewel cases, everything but the game discs themselves - so they can just dupe the discs and ship 'em, Danno.

I'd like the CE, but I'm not into paying $80, even with the extras. $60-$65, maybe; $80? No.

Is day of defeat any good (comes in the steam gold package)? That is the only piece of software missing from the retail versions. If it is any good, I may have to buy from valve.

Same here. $80 is WAY too much, and Valve is trying to rip everyone off. They know some people will pay $100 fo the CE, but $80 is probably a sweet spot. I can't blame them, however, as I would make as money as I could as well.

I really want a retail version, also, but we'll see how they price it over Steam. It will be interesting to see how much, if any, cheaper it is on Steam, seeing as to how no materials will have to be used to download the game.
