hl2 questions

while playing halflife 2 when i look directly at someone talking i can hardly hear them, if i look to the left or the right of them i can hear them fine. i tried setting it to headphones and 2 speakers and it does it on both, another question is there a freeware defrag tool thats better than the one in xp
