a day or 2? The first time you play single player you need to be connected to the internet also, but after that you are golden.

did you buy the cds or not? i bought them and it takes a couple hours (tops) to finish updating it to where you can play offline. CS:S and HL2 deathmatch will take a really long time to update though...many hours...

Put it this way: Get it started, don't expect to use your phone for a day, don't get to antsy to play.

HL2 wasn't designed with dial-up in mind, and rightfully so, honestly.

I feel sorry for ya bud. I almost went insane after waiting for my game to get updated and all and I'm on cable. I guess all the waiting will pay off once you start playing it.

is there anyway to choose just what you want updated, or is it going to update everything, all i need is hl2 single player, not multiplayer deathmatch
another question, does cs:s have single player or is it strictly multiplayer

The HL2 update alone will take forever, cant you take your computer to a friends house with broadband just to get the updates?

i did consider this option but i live deep in the country and the closest place with broadband or even dsl is at least 30 min away. I thought about getting my dad to take to where he works, where he has dsl, but he would have to get approval from his boss and all that official stuff. so i figured the best way would be to get a modem and run it for a day, assuming it will take no more than a day.

Damn i feel for you! I know the curse of 56k! Everything takes ages :( Every online game you join its "hey hey! its 56k! *BAN*"

Go find somthing to do for a day and leave it on, put a notice saying "do not touch!" on the keyboard.

If you bought the discs, then you'll be able to finish the updates within a day. If you need to download the whole game... then you now own this modem. HL2 is the only single player game in the pack.

Um with that download rate even a day might be on the optimistic side. Expect it to take closer to two days instead of just one.

Take it back to the store. The game's not that great and Steam totally ruins the experience.
