HL2 Problems-trying to get single player started

Hello,
I just received this game for Christmas. I downloaded it tonight. I'm just trying to play to single player and Steam is saying that it's an invalid cd key? I have typed the CD key in over 20 times and the same dialog box keeps appearing.

Has anyone had this problem?
Please advise. :disgust:
