I have a 9600 256mb running at 9600pro speed. I have been thinking of upgrading. My pc has a Athlon XP-M 2500 overclocked to 3200 speed and a gig of 3200 ddr. I trying to decide bettween getting a Nforce 3 with a 3000 A64 Venice, and keeping the 9600 a while. Or I can get a A64 Venice and a Nforce 4 Ultra. Now if I go Nforce 4, I will need a new card. What card is better X700pro 256mb or 6600gt 128mb? Please help me decide what to do.

Get X700Pro

X700 is the equivalent to 6600 not 6600GT. 6600GT's oponent is X700 PRO
X700PRO beats 6600GT in HL2 because HL2 has always be better on ATI cards

There's nothing wrong with your platform.

If your objective is bang-for-buck gaming get a 6800GT (or 800XL). It'll play HL2 butter smooth. Does for me.

And NO, an XP 3200+ is not a noticeable bottleneck for these gfx cards.

Kojak,

Listen to Fern... there is nothing wrong with what you have if you just want to play HL2.

I'm playing it on a similar setup as you except with a R9800Pro.
I have no problems at all.
Smooth as silk.
