HL2 not working?

I finally spent the 2 hours downloading HL2 off of Steam and the damn thing doesnt work!

When I double click the HL2 icon on my desktop the mouse goes away, but the desktop remains and the game doesn't initialize.

No error message. I can control-alt-delete and in the task manager it says HL2 -not repsonding. I can end the task and operation resumes as normal.

System in sig. 3DMark, BF2, Far Cry, P95 and memtest all stable.
 
Just be glad that once it starts working you won't have to put up with the "A.I. Disabled" bug...it can really ruin a night of gaming to find that you have to go back to a save from 3 hours ago because the game's crazy anti-piracy logic decides to turn off the NPC A.I. at a point in the game where the next trigger is dependent on NPC actions...very frustrating...
