HL2 makes many people sick

over at dsl reports

long thread with many people complaining.

They say one reason might be the 75 FOV they use, and further in the thread the describe how you can set the default FOV (field of vision) to 90 degrees.

Its kinda amazing to see that even hardcore gamers who played every FPS under the sun get sick playing HL2 the first time.

Wonder what valve says here...how does their play-testing loook ? I also heard mentioning that some game testers got sick

Happened to me. Fortunately the fix of changing fov to at least 90 seems to work.

Playing the boat level was what did it to me. Playing that for about an hour left me with nausea and I had to go lie down.

First time such a thing happened to me and I basically only play first person shooters.

over there some people say changing the fov helps. to do it, go to the console and type:

sv_cheats 1
default_fov 90

and restart the game.

if that doesn't work...

I changed my FOV to 90 and I saw the difference from the menu, but when I switched right back into the game it reset back to whatever it was by default.

I also tried changing it and then immediately restarting but it did not stick or at least I could not tell a difference... And when I type fov is still said 0.

After you apply the "delault_fov 90" restart the game, open the console and enable the cheats than type "delault_fov 90" again. Notice that nothing changes.

Than type "default_fov 75". See now how it changes back to 75? And when you quit the console and resume the game it changes back to 90.

i don't have a problem on halflife, but this time(halflife 2) really makes me dizzy.

may be now i am using a LCD and may be too many driving occassion..

hmm.. i have a proper drivers licence but not yet in Halflife2

I have been able to prevent nausea simply by playing high.

Next time I get caught with weed, I'll say it's for medical purposes for playing HL2. 😉

Yeah, I've been an avid fps gamer for a while, and this is the first game that has made me sick since I was 9 or so. Wasn't sure why, until I found out about the 75 degree fov. Changing fov helps; I've also found setting cl_smooth to 0 seems to help.

Happens to me with Halo 2 on a 57" wide screen... I change it to Normal letterbox mode and it's better for me... cause there's no FOV option. :|

I get a headache if I play it for hours on end never looking at anything else but the screen. Is that what others are doing? I'm fine as long as I get up every hour or so.

I've had motion sickness/seasickness in real life from time to time but NO problem while playing this game.

I don't play for more than an hour or two at a time though.

rofl 🙂

Yup, I got headache playing HL2 also, same goes with just about all the shooting games except counter-strike. Maybe I got used to counter-strike...

I don't know, no headaches for me. However, i think i have developed an addiction to the game. Whenever I'm not playing, i would sometimes get sad, or sometimes my right ear would go hard of hearing for like a second. Never got sick, nauseated, or anything like that. Also, this game has contributed to ruining my eyes even more 😛. Other than that, great game.

I haven't played HL2 yet but this sounds plausible to me. For a very brief time I got a feeling like that from Painkiller and UT2K3. After about an hour of play I grew accustomed to the games and didn't feel bad any longer. The weird thing is that I don't get motion sickness in the traditional sense... 😕

after going 6 chapters, i don't get sick anymore. played 4 hours straight just now and went to chapter 10. and now i'm typing this.
