HL2 installed on multiple computers? also, question about making a backup copy

I got myself a copy of HL2: CE and currently I have it installed on my laptop. Is it legit to install it on my desktop as well (so I can play it on my laptop when I'm on the go and on my desktop when I'm at home)? Would I risk getting my account disabled (or was that just cracked keys)?

Also, I got the DVD version and I was wondering if there's anything special I need to do if I am to make a backup copy of the game (I know some games you can't just copy the data; there's something more to it but I don't remember what). IIRC backup copies of software you already own are still legit so my question here is how to make a copy that will work properly.

You can install it on your desktop legally. You just can't play online with both computers at the same time. (you can even log into your account at a friend's house to download and play HL2 from there) Just remember your cd-key is tied to your account and not your computer.

If you have a DVD burner you could just use that to create a copy. As far as I know there isn't anything special about copying HL2 DVD/CDs. There is also another feature Valve added in November to produce backup files that you can burn. Just right-click the game in the Steam window.

Ok, here's a question to elaborate. Let's say I have Steam installed on both computers and both are online at the same time (obviously I would only play HL2 from one of the machines though, as the CD/DVD version requires the actual disk to be in the drive). Would that cause any problems? That being me logged into my account from 2 different machines simultaneously.

The question is whether Steam will even let you log in twice. I'd assume your second logon would either fail or boot your first logon. I'm not sure though, probably a Steam FAQ somewhere that gives more info on simultaneous account logons.

So what happens when the other computer tries to log on? Will Steam just tell you you're already logged in on a different computer (like battle.net does)?

Can you play a LAN multiplayer game at the same time on both computers or does HL2 have to log into STEAM to play a LAN game also?
