HL2 has no sound

I just installed it and the the game has no sound. The beginning valve movie has sound, but there are no ingame sounds or music. All the music and sound .wav files are in the HL2 folder, so I the sounds installed. I was thinking that the path might be incorrect. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
 
Did you try changing the HL2 sound settings to "2 speaker" mode? That should fix it, albeit at the expense of surround effects. I have an SBLive Value and had the same problem. Apparently it's a driver issue, but I never managed to solve it.
