That's the message I get when trying to load HL2. I installed the game with no problems from the disc, installed the updated version of Steam, and then registered my copy via Steam. Now, regardless of how I try to start the game, I get that message. I'm using the most recent drivers for my mobo (Intel IC7Max3) and video (6800GT) and even went and applied the latest firmware update for my Plextor DVD drive. When the game tries to load, I hear it whirl up for all of 2 or 3 seconds, then it slows down, repeat ad nauseum. I know this drive is fine, it's all of 3 weeks old, and runs every other DVD disc just fine (and, like I said, the install went down without a hitch).

I've looked over a few forums and did some searches, but didn't see anyone else having this problem. Anyone here in AT familiar with this behavior?

LAME Mr. Newell!!! Consumers don't like paying $80 for an error message! :|

I got the CE today and have not had this issue. At first it could not verify my CD-Key, but it still allowed me to play... When I came back out of the game a few minutes ago, it confirmed that I was verified and gave a receipt.

Tried it again this morning, and still no luck. For giggles, I disabled Daemon Tools to see if maybe HL just doesn't like it. Nada.

I'm pretty steamed now. Really wishing Valve could have spared us the grief and just released the game in the normal fashion without all this Steam BS. Should have called it Steamer. :|

ROTC, what kind of DVD drive do you have? I'm running a Plextor PX-712A with the latest firmware.

Here's VU's take on the problem:

I had the same problem with my PX-712A. I upgraded the firmware and all but didn't solve anything. So just out of desperation, I hooked up my old NEC DVD-ROM drive and guess what, the damn thing loads up just fine.

I haven't tinkered with the PlexTool's settings to figure out if there's sth wrong with my drive's config etc but hope this helps.
