A friend of mine gave me his Retail version HL2 with all the CD's, ect. He did register it and tried to play it, but his 1.6gig/Gforce2 card would not play it well, so he gave it to me.

Can I still play this game, or will the on-line requirement to register this before playing see a different steam account (mine in stead of his) and ban me/ not work?

You will have to use his steam ID for it to work. After he registered it can no longer be registered on another steam account.

Uggh, that's what I was afraid of. I will see if he will do that.

He just needs to give you his steam username and password.

After that, you can change the contact email and change the password.

I did the same thing when I tried it out - used a buddies account and DL'd the whole game - I was actually about to buy the game but he said he had finished it and I could use it.
He previously had the game installed on his laptop and home pc so it appears you can install it on multiple machines but presumably you cannot be online at the same time?

The game had way too many glitches for a finished product if you ask me...:disgust:

You can be online at the same time You just can't be on the same server unless your its LAN server then as many people can be on with the same key as you have computers. It will also always ask you for the steam account password everytime you join a new server.

Sorry JBT, I beg to differ.

The same steam account can't be logged on from two different computers concurrently... only in offline mode.

No YOU are wrong. Log in steam on computer 1. Enter a online server and play
Number 2 computer log on steam with the SAME EXACT ACCOUNT enter an online server that is DIFFERENT than the other person playing. It will prompt you to enter ur password again because your "Steam ticket" has expired. Enter ur PW again and enter server. There you go two people/computers logged on and PLAYING with one steam account. They have to be different servers unless the server is on YOUR own LAN. I have had 4 people playing with one steam account on my own home LAN before.

OK, I stand corrected. I tested it out and it does work.

Wow, makes me wonder what purpose steam authentication serves...
