In HL2/CSS the 12x10 res has in brackets (LCD). What is this all about? I've been meaning to ask this for a long time.

Most likely refers to the fact that 1280x1024 LCDs are 5:4 and they have that as native. Unlike CRTs which are 4:3. Not sure though. I always thought it enumerated your monitor inf, determined your max res and appended (LCD) to it. Then it makes sure you select that if you have an LCD so no interpolation will happen.

Yeah, that's it. It still displays 'LCD' next to that resolution for me (even though my monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050, which is displayed separately in the Widescreen 16:10 category anyway).

It's weird. I am running a CRT and when I enable 1280x1024 it seems to maintain a 4:3 ratio. But when I enable a 4:3 ratio 12x9 res the screen is squished from the sides. But all the other 4:3 ratios such as 8x6, 10x7, 11x8, 16x12 it maintains a 4:3 ratio to my monitor. WTF?

CRT screen have a native 4:3 ratio, so the correct 1280 resolution would be 1280x960. Any other ratio will offer distorted geometry or somesuch, even in some games. 17-19" LCDs have a 5:4 ratio, which matches 1280x1024.

You're running a CRT, so you can manually change the screen size (as well as a ton of other things) via your monitor's menu. The fact that other resolutions look fine probably just means that someone has already set the correct size and geometry for each.

Not for me, that's what's weird. Running the game at 12x9 gets really messed up, the sides are squished inward. But every other 4:3 ratio works. 12x10 seems to run at a 4:3 ratio. I'm using a CRT btw.
