HL1 Before HL2 Poll?

I played HL1 a long time ago about 1/2 the way through on a friends computer. I was always more into strategy games and was addicted to Rome Total War at that time and for many months after. I like HL1 but, never bought the game.

I now have steam Silver and just finished up a campaign of Rome Total War 🙂 The day HL2 came out I played for a couple hours and loved the graphics and gameplay. To get a better "experience" would you recommend completing HL1 Source before jumping in to HL2?

Thanks.... I begin play this evening after work!

I would definitely recommend playing HL1 first. To me it would be like watching the Empire Strikes Back before A New Hope: not terrible but the story base, references, and inside jokes can be fully appreciated.

Did just that. Bought the Collector's Edition and played right through 'til Nihalanth's chamber.

Took it down, made the choice, then went straight into HL2.

Nah, go ahead and play HL2 first. Just find the story of HL1, read it in about 10 minutes, and save yourself about 15-20 hours of gameplay.

I never did finish HL. I'm glad I seen the X play HL2 review. It explained the story of the first one right down to the end. Now when I finally upgrade my video card I can go and play HL2.

I never finished HL my self but I did watch some video of a guy beating it in like 45-50 minutes.

I never played through HL1 as when I tested it it looked ugly as dirt and was pretty boring. But I'm stuck in HL2 not knowing who I am, what I'm doing, or anything. There's supposed to be a storyline but they never tell me any of it really.

What was so great about HL1? Plain vanilla FPS with a generic story line, OK graphics, and mediocre AI. Just your typical scripted linear game.

Yes, I played the game to the end.

I'm one of those obsessive gamers that prefers to play the installments of games in order, so I say play HL 1 first. Sure, it looks dated by todays standards, but when it came out was rather unique. IIRC it's the first one with scripted sequences, certainly had the most innovative beginning. The ride down to the office in the tram is one of my favorite moments in gaming history. It set such a great tone for the game. You could tell something was going to go tragically wrong. It felt somewhat like being in the military installation that developed Captain Tripps in The Stand by Stephen King.

If you're like me, you'll thoroughly enjoy the beginning and middle, but the last few levels were just a little much. Then again I'm not very good at FPSs, way too cautious.
