I was told to post here by mechBgon. FYI.

My computer started freezing every once in a while a few days ago, and it's gotten progressively worse, so that it freezes every few minutes or so now. I'll probably have to retype this post several times before I'm done. And System Restore isn?t working (no restore points, though I have it at the max allowed ? Dell Support had me replace the SR file from Service Pack 2 with the one on my original XP Home (w/ Service Pack 1) CD, and at least it created a new restore this morning, which is well after this problem happened).

*** MONDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Although I haven't done anything new since my chat w/ Dell support Monday morning, and I had several freezups early in the day, I haven't had a single freeze all evening/night! I have no idea why, and since I didn't really do anything to fix it, I'm afraid it could easily come back tomorrow. ***

*Windows XP Home
*McAfee VirusScan ? auto updates
*2Wire Wireless Home Portal firewall
*I use the most updated versions of Spybot S&D & AdAware & Spyware Blaster 2x-3x a week.
*I regularly use Disk Cleanup & empty my temp file.
*My startup menu has these programs on it: McAfee, SBC/Yahoo DSL, digital camera, mp3 player

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Stop the camera and mp3 software from loading at startup. Either go through the menus and disable them or go to start, run, msconfig, and disable them under the startup tab.

Right click your desktop, choose properties, appearance, and change your visual theme to windows classic. Apply and go to the appearance tab. Turn off all special effects except font smoothing. Apply and exit. Now right click on your new "my computer" icon, choose properties, advanced, performance options. Choose "adjust for best performance" leaving only font smoothing and drop shadows under icons selected. Hit apply and exit. Now delete all of the icons on your desktop you don't need there...including printers/network connections, etc. Once you have your desktop cleaned up, the eye candy turned off, and unnecessary programs from starting, you will be putting much less stress on your CPU.

I also recommend you visit www.blackviper.com and print out a copy of his Service Pack 2 configurations. Most people can use his "safe" configuration without any problems at all. Disable as many services as you can, then defragment your hard drive.

Finally, double click on my computer, and right click on your C: drive, choose properties, tools, and "scan disk for errors". Click every box in the checkdisk menu and hit apply. Reboot and let Windows fix any errors on your drive. It can take a long time, especially if you have a screwed up hard drive. Just be patient and let it do its thing.

After it's finished, defragment your drive again.

Your system is now pimped.

No offense to Capitalizt, but don't do this.

A few icons, visual effects, services or legitimate programs in startup will not freeze your computer. (BTW how do you know which theme the OP is using?)

I'm no HJT expert, so I'll leave that to someone else to look at.

nothing I mentioned could hurt his computer...Disabling the unneeded eye candy and stopping unneeded programs/services from running is a good way to save RAM and CPU cycles. Less stress on the CPU is always a good thing.
