I finally bought new stuff after my trusty P4 2.4C@3400, I'm a first time A64 Opteron user now. I got 2 146s Venus here, both with a stepping that's being known for overclockability (0540 CABYE FPBW). The board is an EPoX 9NPA+ ULTRA also known for good stability, cooling is provided by a TT Big Typhoon so a solid performer here, too, memory is good old TwinMos CH-5. The system runs on a box for testing purposes very well cooled atm.

Now it seems I can't go over 275 HTT which is much too low for this board. In addition both CPUs only run up to 2550 Mhz, that's a joke - they should do >> 2800. Many people are hitting 3100+ here with 0540 CABYE FPBW from the same retailer!

Now I have n00b questions: may I have messed something up during WinXP install? Is the A64 CPU driver absolutely nessecary? In what order should I install drivers?

Do you have any tips or hints for me? I never had a CPU that did less than 140-160% of stock speed. I feel like a dork to be true... :(

I played save and kept it at +0.2v (1.63-1.66 in CPU-Z 1.31) at a good spot between too little and too much. Temp reads < 43°C under full load.

Maybe two additions: My PSU is a 350W Fortron which scored well at a comparison at TomsMarketingGuide (real power >400W). And I'm not 100% sure I checked Hypertransport to be x3 to keep it around 1000 max after a bios update/reset. May these two infos be important?

It depends on the rest of your system, if you have a power hungry videocard and lots of extra stuff your PSU might be a underpowered.

You definately need to check your HTT speed.

The A64 driver from AMD is only for dualcores.

And last, overclocks are never guarrantied.
