Hitchhiking viable?

My only hitchhiking experience was in the back of a police pickup in Guatemala 🙂

We were in El Remate and wanted to go to Tikal. All the microbuses that passed were full. The two policeman/lady were really cool. We got so many funny looks from people we passed.

No, I don't intend to carjack/rape/mug anyone. I was thinking of getting in a dress shirt and tie to soothe people's fears that I'm a criminal. Think that would help?

I wouldn't pick up a hitchhiker no matter what they were wearing.

Rent a car?

I'm not 100% certain, but the bus station is probably in downtown Longview, so you will need to take a cab from the bus station out to I-20. If you can't rent a car, then the bus is your best option.

Especially one in a fvcking tie. That would make me think he's even more nuts.

Don't you have parents?

I can get my roommate to pick me up from the Greyhound station probably. It's only about 2.5 miles from my final destination, actually.

To clarify:

'Home' is Boston. Parents are dropping me off in BOS. I fly to DFW. DFW is the only real major airport, ~100 miles away. In the past I've taken the train, but I'm getting in too late this time. Besides, I hate the train. Amtrak sucks bigtime. Always late, station is always full of beggars(really).

Greyhound is on time, at least they were when I went from MPLS to Lincoln Nebraska.

They are maybe skewed 5-10 minutes, but good none the less!

Neat, thanks for the info. How early before bus departure to they want you to arrive?

I've hitchiked all over the place, many trips. Don't wear a tie. Dress neat and clean, dress like the people you want to pick you up. No sunglasses. You might want to make a sign.

But do you have to arrive at a certain time, this is always tough.

Hadn't been a problem in the past. I didn't count hours when I was booking and didn't realize the train would have left already.

I hear that. The town I grew up in had a mental hospital so there were signs along that particular road to not pick up hitch hikers. I'm in a much larger city now, and that's all the more reason to not pick up strangers.

If a person looks like they're travelling ... i.e. backpack, not too grubby/not too clean, I usually give them a ride as long as I know exactly where they're going. I have some karma to pay back as I spent about 7 months hitching around Europe, and had no bad experiences whatsoever.

Most people are genuinely friendly ... not so sure about the States, but especially in around the mountains if I have room I stop every time.
