Hitchhiking viable?

I've had no luck arranging a ride for myself from the DFW airport by to school in Longview, TX. My backup plan was to take Amtrak, but I just realized that my plane arrives ten minutes after the train departs. So I need to come up with some alternative. I was thinking about hitchhiking. My destination is right on a major highway (I-20), so I might get lucky and find a straight shot. My timeline is that I arrive in DFW around 4 and need to be in Longview by the next morning at least.

I've never hitchhiked before. I'm a large white male, so people may be afraid that I'm going to mug/rape/carjack them. I'll have baggage, too.

Do you think that I'll have any luck if I try this?
 
bus? Greyhound? shuttle at a nearby hotel?
if i lived in the area i'd give you a ride

No, I don't intend to carjack/rape/mug anyone. I was thinking of getting in a dress shirt and tie to soothe people's fears that I'm a criminal. Think that would help?
 
that might be too over the top, wearing a tie to hitch hike

just wear something nicer, your better casual shirt/pants , whatever you have that is more upscale , The Gap or whatever is considered fancier clothes/designer or brand name

Probably. I almost did a big hitchhiking trip myself but decided against it seeing as how I have a car. But there are a few websites that have a lot of info in hitchhiking, you'd have to Google them but they shouldn't be hard to find. Really it doesn't sound like that bad of an idea, especially because it is a straight shot like you said. I've picked up hitchhikers in Yosemite and in Salt Lake City, mostly because it is obvious they are just going to/from the mountains and need a ride down the long windy road. Your case may be similar.
 
I just picked up a hitchhiker this morning!

I figured I would be pretty safe during morning rush hour on I94. Took him about 40 miles. Turns out 'Peter' was a faith healer from South Africa. He got a ride and I got blessed. Win-Win.
 
The next train is the next day. Too late, as I have classes. I was cutting it close when I booked my tickets. There is no earlier flight for me to switch to for my airline. I don't intend to give up and not even try to arrive on time.

Greyhound may work. For some reason, they saw fit to have all their bus stations far away from the airport. I think I can catch the Trinity rail to their Dallas station, though. Maybe. Timing is tight, but possible. I think. Is greyhound usually on time?
 
Ok, a cab is out of the question. Longview and DFW airport are nowhere near each other. That's about 100 miles. Your best bet is to take Greyhound. If you're going to hitchhike you'll need to get out of Dallas.

That's what I have been doing. Most of my friends from that area are driving in Sunday. Those that I've heard back from, anyway.

man hotels will have airport shuttle that you could take...

If I saw a guy wearing a dress shirt and tie hitchhiking, I'd think he's trying to sooth my fears that he's a criminal so he can get in my car and kill me.

:thumbsup: to people like you. My buddy and I hitchhiked once in Sierras: our backpacking route took us across two passes via PCT in 3 days, and we got a ride back with several people who were kind enough to stop and load us and our backpacks.

I live 20 minutes from the airport. My roommate is a pilot in training and flies from that airport 3 times a week. Last flight to GGG leaves DFW at 11:30AM, I arrive in DFW at 4PM.

Can anyone comment on the reliability/on-timeness of Greyhound? Anyone used them before?
