As far as I know, it's against the law in most parts of the country.. I know it is in Oregon and Washington.

Yes, I would do it. Yes, we have picked up hitchhikers before. Yes, it would be wise to choose who you drive with carefully.

No, I don't think it is dangerous, overall.

I believe it's only against the law on the freeway in Washington, and don't think it is at all in Oregon. I've hitchiked quite a bit in Oregon, California, and Washington trying to get between trailheads and supply stops (when hiking the PCT). :D

I do it when backpacking sometiems. And a few times around town, although the bus will normaly do the trick. I have used the good ol' thumb to get between trailheads and what not.

Entity, what parts of the PCT did you do? One day im gonna do the whole thing.

I did about 2000+ miles of it two years ago. We intended on doing the whole thing, but unfortunately one of our friends decided to get married during the summer, and called us on the trail. My hiking partner, Corey, was supposed to be the best man for the wedding...so we skipped some of the northern California desert (as most of California is) and hiked Oregon and Washington. Overall, we hiked about 1000+ miles in Ca (including the JMT) along with Oregon and Washington. Washington was by far the most beautiful section of the trail. :D

I'm pretty sure it is against the law in Oregon.. I know it is in Washington, because of all the hitchhikers killed many years ago.
