The Samsung will be quieter - the Hitachi will beat the Samsung on most performance points while not being that much louder (see http://www.storagereview.com).

I've had a Hitachi 7K80 (80GB) for about a month and so far I think it's great.

Ok, so I pulled the trigger on three of the Samsungs. Will regular SATA cables work if I'm want to use the drive in SATA II mode?

Hitachi has had some HD problems in the past; a lot of people have had their hitachi hard drives die prematurely. not completely sure on the details, though.

http://www.jab-tech.com has SATA II cables - but IDK if they're really any diff from regular but they do have the metal latch thing that's supposed to keep them from falling off.

The installation guide for my 7K80 doesn't suggest any special cable - just says up to 1 M in length.

There are no prerequisites for SATAII HD's so cables have no requirements other than capabilities of reaching the 3.0 Gb/s. There are better cables being produced which have metal clips and/or L type hookups which may b required for SATA2.5. The only HD which meets SATA2.5 Specs on the market now that I know of is the Seagate SATA 7200.9.

I use the 2-Hitachi 250GB's in RAID0 and after the flash am quite pleased although I saw minimum difference in performanc before and after.

When you say in the past, did you mean in the IBM deskstar days?

Too many rag on Hitachi unfairly becasue of that model. Granted it was the most spectacular failure ever but IBM was making award winning drives for the most part of the 50 yrs in the harddrive business.
