i rarely power my computer off, but when i do i noticed my 250gb hitachi t7k250 makes a weird ticking sound. sounds like a mechanical clock. it does it for maybe 20 seconds and then stops.

shoudl i be concerned? i'd really rather not lose all my data, so shoudl i be buying a new hard drive and transferring all my stuff over while i still can?

Some drives also make chirping sounds. :p I'm not 100% positive, but it's probably okay if the drive is functional and passes the manufacturer's test software. The noise may be the drive heads parking or something like that.

Hard drives that otherwise seem perfectly fine without strange noises have been known to just suddenly and catastrophically fail. If data is important to you, you should ALREADY have a backup regardless of any ticking sounds.

oddly the ticking stopped. but i already bought a new drive, so i guess i will replace it anyway since odd ticking noises scare me.
