Hitachi Microdrive 2 GB - Wolf Camera $99.00 AR

This is actually a lousy price on microdrives. You can get a 2.2GB Microdrive at Mwave for half the price.

Also, consider the downsides of a microdrive. Some cameras do not accept them (CF type II is required), and the fact that they need to be kept spinning cuts down on battery life. Transfer speeds should be a bit better than CF, though.

For anyone who needs a big CF card, look at SanDisk's 2GB CF card. You can get it for 140$ at ZipZoomFly.

I use this Microdrive in my Canon S1 digicam and have been very happy with it. And that is a very good price for it. Standard CF cards are slower than this and not suitable for the VGA quality movies the S1 and some other digicams take, so if that is an issue, consider the Microdrive. CF Ultra II would be even faster, but are considerably more expensive for the same capacity. As noted, these Hitachi drives have a much better reputation than Magicstor ones. CF cards in theory would be more durable, but I've had no problems in that regard with mine (and others with Hitachi say the same), nor any issues with battery life.

the price is considerably low compared to any fast CF right now. however, a lot of folks that i ask that uses Digital SLR tend to shy away with microdrives. reasoning, CF are more durable, no moving parts that can malfunction ( i dont know if this is true ). thanks for all the input guys.

TrocD, I have the same camera and am looking into some larger CF cards. Are you able to take >1GB movies with your S1 and this card? How much video can you put on it @640x480/30fps?

Smartsam -

Yes, this card works great at the 640 x 480/30fps setting. My understanding is that the limit for the camera (nothing to do with the card) is 1 gig per video clip which is between 8 and 9 minutes of video at the highest setting. I've never had a clip that long, but have filled up my card with about 18 minutes of clips. As I mentioned earlier, beware of standard CF cards if you want to use that setting, since they probably won't be able to write fast enough to keep up. Get a Microdrive or Ultra II.

By the way, I believe that if you have the updated firmware, the S1 can accept 4GB cards now, although I've only used the 2GB.
