I've only owned WD and Maxtor(and now Seagate which I like). I've had a few Maxtors show signs of failing but none up and just fail on me.

But was offered a hitachi 80gb to trade for my 60gb WD and 30gb Samsung.

The Hitachi's are favorite drives of some... I really do think for the most part they are one of the best out there right now.

Check storagereview for support :p

Hitachi took over IBM hard drives, so still bad feelings about Deathstars. With that said, I've only seen good things said about Hitachi's from people who actually own them.

Hitachis are awesome, and they currently have the fastest SATAII drives available (they rival Raptors in REAL WORLD PERFORMANCE)

Not quite.... Hard Drive Battle (Research Results!)

What drive is the WD 160?
I looked and the fastest 160GB drive i can find is still slower (timing wise) then the Hitachi's....

Still, on the Hitachi note, the SATAII drives they have out will give a Raptor a run for its money, even though it may lose out a little in some things (map loading for games is pretty darn close, i notice my 160GB Hitachi loads BF:1942 at the same rate as my Raptor used to)

didnt know it did that good, but the Hitachi still rivals the Raptor in real world gains (although, that just means the 160 WD will do even better against a Raptor)

Each of the drives did better or worse at certain benchmarks, what you're looking it is an overall summary of all of the benchmarks.

Raptor > Seagate > Hitachi > WD

I saw the scores now, but are those all SATAII drives, 8mb cache (besides the Raptor)?

Nope, they are the drives that were tested here.

Yea, im talking SATAII market, hence why my post said
they currently have the fastest SATAII drives available

Which they do, as is told by the times they have (Seagate is tied in Latency times, but loses out in seek times against Hitachi)

And, back to the Raptor, a SATAII Hitachi, while not beating a Raptor, will give it a run for its money (ie, it can rival one), and will only lose by very minute/unnoticeable marigins (in real world performance, such as map loading and the likes)
