Hitachi Deskstar vs Western Digital Black (2TB)

Since my four older Western Digital drives are running out of room, last month I purchased two of the new Seagate Barracuda 3TB drives (ST3000DM001) since the price was somewhat reasonable at $175. Unfortunately, both of them only lasted 2 days and died quickly.

After I sent them back, I got two of the Western Digital Black 2TB drives (WD2002FAEX) at $200/each. Still more than I'd like to spend, but I've used them for 2 weeks and haven't had any problems with them. Their read speed is about 120MB/s and write is 110MB/s. The only thing I don't like about them is their noise. I can get use to loud "rumbling" whenever there are reads/writes, but the drives produce a consistent high-pitch oscillating sound that is always present..just like my Western Digital RE3 1TB drive that is 4 years old. That is only "issue" that I was hoping would not be present on the new W.D. Black, but I can hear it.

This led me to try out the Hitachi Deskstar 2TB 7K3000 (HDS723020BLA642). I've had them for about 5 days, and they are much quieter during reads/writes than the W.D. Black drives, and also do not make the high-pitch oscillating sound. Transfer rates are better at 150MB/s read and 150MB/s write. My only concern is about their reliability. They have a 3-year warranty, but it starts from the manufacture date (Sept 2011), which only gives me until 9-22-2014, so that's really less then 3 years of use.

So at this point I'm wondering which one is the best drive to keep, either the WD Black or the Hitachi Deskstar since both are the same price. My older drives are WD and are 4-7 years old, and still work, and the new WD Black has 5 year warranty which is a plus. But the Hitachi is quieter and faster, but shorter warranty - though that doesn't mean they are less quality.

Any suggestions?

So it's now been about 10 days of using the two Hitachi drives, still no issues with them. But I did checkout the recent reviews on NewEgg, and it seems that most of the recent ones are saying they've arrived DOA. Thankfully I didn't have that issue on either one, but still makes me think about their overall quality compared with WD.

Honestly?

Build quality and arriving DoA (or Dead after a few days usage) have little to nothing to do with each other.

The #1 culprit for DoA and early death is shipping damage. Build quality and series quality really are statistically more applicable for life AFTER the first month.

So I'd blame whomever packaged the box (guessing Amazon) OR the carrier for your Seagate woes.

I've got a Hibachi 500GB in my new build, I like it so far... no problems and it's quiet as a church mouse. It's been in use for about 6 weeks and I've got it about half full already... I'm thinking about adding another.

Defects usually show up within the first year. After that, you should be ok until you use it to death or it becomes useless to you - whichever comes first.

I don't know any statistics on who has the more reliable drive, but those Hitachis are the newest and greatest. I believe those are the new ones with the 1TB platters, which gets you those nice super fast transfer rates.

I just received my 2TB seagate drive today from newegg as was quite surprised at how they have changed the packaging of bare drives. Opened up, found a smaller box inside taped shut....two plastic holders to secure the drive within the box and the usual anti-static bag. A big upgrade from their old method of throwing some paper or bubble wrap on it and putting it into a box that was over sized to begin with.

I love WD Blacks, but that Hitachi sure looks nice.
I saw a killer deal at NCIX, 3TB Hitachi Deskstar for $159.
Click on it and the price was changed to $299 (surprise deal sold out). *sigh*

The Seagate Barracuda 3TB came from Amazon and was double boxed, just like the WD Black I got from Amazon a week later, and the Hitachi Deskstar I got earlier this month from NewEgg.
All we're similar double boxed and was delivered via UPS.
Now it could have been that the Seagate was damaged in transit from China to the US, but there are several others on Amazon that are reporting that the Seagate 3TB dies rather quickly after using it.

I know the Seagate Barracuda 3TB was using three 1TB platters. The white papers for the Hitachi Deskstar 2TB says it has three platters, but doesn't saw what size each of them are. Maybe 667GB per platter? I know the WD Black 2TB is using 5 platters.

That's how my Hitachi 2TB came from NewEgg, as well as the WD Black 2TB and Seagate 3TB from Amazon. All had that box with the plastic holders on the top and bottom to secure the drive.
