Alright, I'm stuck between these two. On the one hand the Hitachi is cheaper but I have the feeling that more people are buying the NEC. I'm worried that there is something obvious that I am missing. Which is the better buy, the Hitachi or the NEC?

Thanks for any help.

Not trying to throw a kink in your plans, but how about a Viewsonic VP171B??? We discussed this monitor, the NEC, and the Planar / Hitachi in this thread:

17" 16ms Response LCDs

It was a pretty informative post that included a few good technical highlights and theories in the post. Something worth reading. If I must say... I like the NEC, as I have seen it in action and it is a great monitor.

Ahh, too many decisions!!

It seems the vp171b is more expensive. I'm willing to pay the extra $$ if it is truly superior, but, if it's equivalent to the nec and the hitachi ... ...

When I did a comparison at monitordirect, all of these were exactly the same across the board (except price, the vp171b is $100 more).

I'm thinking for $439, the hitachi is the way to go. The only reservation I have is the hitachi, apparantly, has a lower contrast ratio (400:1) than the other two ...

The Hitachi is perfect for most things.
Im a heavy gamer, and do alot of internet stuff with it, and i think its great. I, like you had doubts about it before buying it, but now i have brought it, i definately didnt regret it one bit.
You can get it in two colours as well, Carbon/Graphire/Black & White/Ivory.

Thankyou very much for the help. Hopefully by the end of the week I will be looking at a screen that doesn't shake and reading text that isn't blurry.

Thanks.

I recall there was speculation that most of these 16ms panels are from the same supplier, although the NEC has a higher brightness while the Hitachi has models with or without speakers. The Viewsonic and Planar are more pricey because of their complex stands (rotatable etc), so it is easier to rule those out if that feature is not required. It got me thinking about using one for MAME though :)
