Hitachi 60gig 7200rpm HDD problems

Well, I purchased the drive from zipzoomfly, brand new less than a month ago.

I woke up this morning to the sound of the hard drive making extremely loud ticking. It also sounds like an old hdd "reading" (extremely loud) even though the hdd access light does not light up. When the HDD does read, it is quite like it normally is.

The drive is doing it as I type. Has anyone else had these problems with these drive? The performance is awesome, but this is my workhorse, I cant afford downtime.

Just wondering if I should RMA this drive and move to a seagate or something.

That doesn't sound good.. Sounds like rma time..

Mine is very quiet, unless it's being accessed and then it's not what would be concidered loud.

Intermittent clicking is very normal with laptop drives. Mine is doing it right now.

If I recall correctly, it has to do with the parking of the drive. There is a software fix on either the Intel or Microsoft website which will quiet the drive down a bit. If you doa search here or Google it, you can find out more....

difficult to diagnose "noise" problems on-line since we all have different sound perceptions. When in doubt, ask a friend.

I've had this happen to me twice.

1. In 2003 I had a 3 week old maxtor 80GB drive that started ticking - SMART told me to backup all my data. I never got the chance to do it as the drive failed to boot or be accessed the same night 🙁

2. October 2004. The Fujitsu drive in my Emachines M6810 started ticking and then locking up the system. Emachines advised that hardware failure was likely the cause.

Ticking at best is a bad sector on the HD from what I understand - at worst it is a surefire sign that the drive is about to fail.

Backup any files you need to keep and get it RMA'd is my advice.

i just RMA'd the drive.

The clicking got worse and worse, it sounds like the needle is just bouncing around in there.

Needless to say, the drive sucks.

I emailed seagate, the 7200.1 momentus is coming in march.
