This deal was posted a couple months ago, but was for online use only... I recently found it again, but was able to pick it up in-store and use one of the many 10-12% off coupons.

I also (personally) verified that inside the external case is a HDS721010KLA330 model Hitachi hard drive, which has been rated one of the fastest single drives out there... (also of note is that the drive has a shorter warranty period than it's retail-boxed internal drive counterparts)... only ~15 months

Hitachi - 1TB External Hard Drive - Model: H31000U | SKU: 8355497
$229.99 - 10-12% off coupon + any applicable tax

With a massive 1TB of storage space, this external hard drive provides ample room for your digital music, photos, video clips and more.

* 32MB cache buffer
* 7200 rpm for fast read/write times
* Compact design takes up minimal desk space

This is the first deal I've posted on here, so please forgive me if I've messed up somewhere in the format :D

Is this the one that had all the problems with overheating and shutting down and not coming back on?
I hope they fixes those problems because the drive is a decent one.

Edit - Same model number, same problems.
This is a great deal if you want to take out the drive and use it internally!

yep its the same one. I got one on the last deal and had to return it cuz of heat and noise issues. I never had any luck with Hitachi HD.

I'd expect that with a large multi-platter drive. Other than that I suppose it functioned as promised? It was capable of accurately storing and retrieving data wasn't it?

So it really wasn't heat and noise?

Also was it only doing that in the enclosure?
Did it work fine as just an internal drive?

a friend of mine has 2 of these in raid and they seem to work fine, but he just has 2 internal drives.

the hitachi 1TB has 5 platters so i wouldnt doubt it gets hot.

all the other 1TB drives have 3 or 4 platters and thus have less to spin to heat up the motor.

Excellent point. The USB bridge could easily and most likely be the culprit here.

After reading some of the reviews on Newegg about just the drive itself, it seems that issues were generally heat and potentially high failure rates. I am thinking the heat is causing the original enclosure to fail, since people are saying other enclosures work with it. With 5 platters spinning around, greater chance to break too.

It's funny to see only a handful of reviews saying the drives were quiet and cool. lol. Since I do not need 1TB and not interested in buying at least 2 for a raid setup, I might just pass on this until they one with less platters.

I bought this a few months ago and am using it as an internal. It runs really hot, 46-48 C, and does a fine job of raising temperatures on surrounding hard drives. I won't be buying any more of them.

I get em in the mail all the time for being a rewards member and I've seen them posted on the net from time to time. I'm sure you can also find them on ebay for a few cents.

I just downloaded that conversion program in your sig and it's great, just the thing I've needed on many occasions. Thanks!
