Not to thread crap, and,
I know there are many other factors that people consider when buying hardware, (like space requirements, power usage, etc.)

but if you look at price/GB of other drives....

IF you have no issue with internal vs. external and you have room in your current server case, you could almost buy 3 x 500GB drives for this price and have either an extra 500GB or have half the 1TB mirrored... OR on the other hand, this 1TB is small and compact, and easy to carry from diff. locations, where 3 x 500GB drives would be a PITA.

Just a thought, good post OP!

Perhaps because it isn't August 8th yet as mentioned in the title.

Incidentally I believe the warranty on this is only one year.

i think some of the 2x500 in one external drives are raid 0 only and don't offer the option of running them as seperate drives? that would make data loss much more likely. :( much bulkier and heavier too.

or if you mean 2 500gb external drives, a 1tb drive would mean less to carry around. :)

Price is live now...
I plan to rip this out of the enclosure. This is much cheaper than just a bare drive. I couldn't wait anymore for the Seagate and WD versions to come out and drive down the price.

I'm pretty sure it's that this is cheaper than any of the internal 1TB drives have been and therefore people are planning to take it out of the enclosure and use it as an internal drive.

This drive has more than just a lot of space in a single drive. Check out the performance this beast gives out compared to Raptor's, here at AT of course. (hoping drives in those tests were retail picked and not OEM provided)

I thought about doing the same thing and putting it in a FW800 enclosure. I am a little worried by the 1 year warranty though:(

When someone opens theirs up, please confirm that it's a SATA drive inside, my receipt actually contains the word PATA in the product description !
I haven't seen any indication that Hitachi even makes a PATA 1TB drive. I won't able to open mine up too soon.

It does come in a PATA version. In my case, I don't care, but I'll let you know.

I just can't wait for this to drive 750GB drives under $130.... saw one at $180 last week, still too high considering 500GB drives are coming in at about $100 or lower.

2X750GB in mirror is what I'm looking for.

I'm really struggling here, trying not to let myself spend $280 right now...

I hope the firmware isn't modified for optimal external performance.

Damnit! I just realized that I could have gotten a couple of these "Tax Free" on Sunday (Georgia Tax-Free Weekend).
