hit wall overclocking 3000+ winchester

Hey guys, the last couple of days, i finally dove into the wild world of overclocking. I was busy all of last year when i bought my computer since i attend medical school, but i bought bf2 this summer and figured i would try to squeeze a bit extra out of my system.

First i'll give you my specs.
Asus a8v
4 512MB corsair pc3200 sticks of ram
geforce 6600GT
amd 3000+ winchester

OK, so i have messed around a bit with all the common overclocking variables and i've hit a wall at 2177 MHZ and 242 FSB with 1.6 volts of power. I have the memory set for DDR 333 so my memory is running at 198 MHZ at this same 242 FSB. I also had the mobo HT transfer at the default 1000 mhz (5x) at the time, but after some research found that this actually caused my speed to be way overclocked to 1210 mhz

I wanted to get my memory to a slight overclock, around 205-210, with a about a 2.3 ghz processor OC, but my processor seems to be holding me back. I increased the voltage to 1.7 and tried raising the FSB to 248, but my computer freezes during the windows loading. (it was stable for a while with 245 FSB and 1.6 volts of power, but then frooze).

It is also stable for 3 hours using prime 95 for the 242 FSB set up (while i watched Wedding Crashers, good movie). This was with the mobo speed of 1210 mhz i mentioned earlier (at the time i didn't realize this was another variable that could be tweaked). So i thought the HT on the motherboard (this is the part i really don't understand) may be causing my problem. So i lowered it from 1000 (5x) to 800 (4x) wich given my fsb of 248 shold have given me a HT of 992. HOwever, i get the same results when i increase my voltage to 1.7 and FSB to 248. Also, if i leave the voltage at 1.6 and up the FSB to 248, same results.

Oh yeah, my temps were good too. i was at 46^C after the 3 hour test.

So, i was hoping some of you savy old verterns at OCing could provide some insight for me. Whats the deal? I have reached the boundry of my rookie ablities. I need some assistance. You think the point i am at now is a good OC? The only part that bothers me is that my ram is actually underclocked at 198mhz.

On a side note, i did decrease the FSB to 220 and set my ram to a 1:1 ratio so it would run at 220mhz to see if my ram was the problem, but everything ran fine that way.

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long post.

your mobo has a max of 1k 242 x 5 is ovwr 1k mobo dosent like that veyr much reduce to 3x and set your divider to 133

is it a CBBID core? Even so, 2.1GHz is ungodly sucky. You seem to be doing everthing right, maybe set a 3x LDT setting. I mean, even my CBBID does 2.6Ghz if you force enough volts through it.

Hmm...does that mobo have PCI/AGP lock? 240-ish is the limit for stability if you aren't locked. Might want to check that out.

I'll check on that PCI/AGP lock...i didn't know about that. And i have tried the 3x LDT settings, still the same results.

I'm not sure what CBBID core is., But mine is a Winchester.

Well, i found something called a AGP/PCI frequency, and i changed it from "auto" to 66.66/33.33. Which was the lowest setting. But it didn't help. i upped the FSB to 248, and same ol' crap. Freezes during windows loading.

well, i appear to have fixed my problem. I updated the bios...i was runing an old version from when i bought the board that was dated for 10/27/04. after L3p3rM355i4 suggested i look at the agp/pci lock, i did some searching on the interent, and apparently the asus a8v deluxe series has had some problems with this. The new updated bios was supposed to fix it and it appers to be working. I am running at 250 FSB with 2250 mhz now. Thanks for the advice L3p3rM355i4, i think you have me going in the right direction. I'll give another update whenever i get settled on a full overclock that i'm happy with.

Hey Confusingcomputer

Hi, I would like learn how my A8V Deluxe OC , Could you tell how set this up in Bios.I'm using 1014.008,
I got 2 36 raptor in raid 0, 1gb corsair 3200c2,geforce fx 5950 and 3200 winnie.

I'm trying see where to start but I'm little confuse how u got ur setup..can you explain to me little more easy where i can get to it...thank😀

WEll, i don't want to tel you anything that will mess up your computer, so first you probably need to update the bios like i did. Mine wouldn't overclock past 242 FSB before that. Also, i don' tkow ANYTHING about the raid arrays, but i assume everything will fuction properly

AFter that you have to go into your bios and change all the overclocking stuff from {auto] to [manual]. that will get you a lot of extra ooptions. ONe important thing you need to do is change you AGP/PCI freqency from [auto] to 66.66/33.33.

right now, i have my FSB at 250. my volts at 1.55. my ram at 2.7V. You'll need to change your ram ratio too. ONce you get into your memory settings, you have to change the clock sped from [auto] to [limit]. This gives you the option to change your ratios. i have my ratio at 3:2.

My stats right now are 2250 mhz up from 1800mhz stock
my ram is only slighty overclocked at 205mhz.

YOu will need CPU-Z to check all your stuff if you haven't got it already.

And remember, i am a completely rookie at this stuff myself, so take everything i say and do with a grain of salt. It has worked for me so far though. I recommend doing some searches and stuff before you get into really OCing. here is a good website that shows how your different OC values affect performance http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Guides/athlon64oc/
