History Question: How did Native Americans hunt whale?

My book says this:

...groups such as the Kwakiutl, Nootka, and Haida collected shellfish form the beaches and hunted the ocean for whales sea otters, and seals.

How did they hunt whales? What kind of weapons would people use to kill something so large, how about bring it in after killing it? I dought the water would be shallow enough for people to take pieces at a time...

I'm pretty sure they used spears with ropes attached to them...not sure of the particulars though.

have you tried google?

Don't really know how they did it. I'm sure they are much better at it than the modern day Native Americans with modern tools.

ok, so after talking to my native alaskan friend(sorry for the old bump) they would get in their boats creep up on a whale and throw a harpoon at it, several even. with the harpoons attached theyd ride around with the whale until it died. then they would drag it back to shore

thats what i've read too.

in my visual anthropology class we studied the eskimo's and their whale hunting. basically a bunch of them went out on kayaks, and stalked a whale. it'd take sereval harpoons and stabs (once they got it close enough) to kill. mind you, we're not talking blue whales here, but pretty big ones (over 20+ feet). it's actually pretty crazy how they rationed out the blubber on shore amongst the tribe onshore. and it's not like they caught a few a day or something.... a hunt for one whale was an all day expedition.
