history of the earth

i remembered a statement from one of my gen. ed. science classes that i thought was pretty interesting.

it was something like... if the entire history of the earth was a 12 hour clock, all of recorded human history would have started at 11:59:59.

discuss.

Recorded history goes back what, 5 or maybe 10 thousand years? Compare that with the age of the Earth of a few billion, and yeah, it's pretty insignificant.

Discuss about what? The earth is billions of years old. There are 1 thousand millions in one billion. And how long have we had recorded history? Maybe 20-30k years? Doesn't take a mathetical genius.

I was assuming when he said 'recorded' history, it included stuff like cave paintings. If so, then 30k is about right.
