I too think the US should just declare English the official language and be done with. Too much energy is being wasted on this no-brainer issue. Melting pot still has to communicate.

Damn straight, QFT.

Currently, we have no official language. If we made English the official language, people would be required to learn it, or they would just plain hard-fail until they did.

Communication is the MOST important thing for a civilization to prosper, why the hell are we dancing and dicking around with the subject?

Up here in Canada, we have 2 official languages. EVerything has to be bilingual and that is a little expensive. No one is required to speak the official language, but if you want some service, you have to be able to speak one of them.

Funny thing is, 911 of our city can handle 100+ languages. You just have to call 911, say the name of the language and they'll put a person that understand that language on. I think that is important.

Only way I could see that working here, is if the two languages were the major Native American language (whichever the most natives spoke, no clue.. each region was different), and English. As far as I am concerned, those are the only two that should be considered native. The deal with Canada, is well, both languages were native to that land. French is the result of those Quebecians being uber-tight and in love with France. :p
Closest we got to that is Louisiana, and I don't see them raising a fuss about being their own country. lol

as for 911.... damn! That's exactly the kind of thing, that regardless of an official national language, needs to be in place everywhere. Quite a few calls go without resolution due to language barriers.

Indeed. That 911 thing is pretty cool, sdifox.

here is what the city says about the service

I am not saying US should get 2 official language, I am just saying if we can make it work with two, one should be way easier.

apparently Toronto 911 can handle 150 languages.

Wow.... you have no idea how much that applies to my calc class last semester. (And 3/4 of the math department here)

ehh..touchy subject. it got a smile out of me, but I'll refrain from expressing my views on language and immigrants, except for this fact:

Have you ever seen a homeless Mexican?

Touchy subject, and many people have strong views on it. As long as I'm doing well, and my immediate community has no glaring issues, I'll let accept how things are in the rest of the country. I can't let myself be bothered or stressed out about it.

I think I saw that in my calc class too, and that was probably around 6 years ago.

I crossed my fingers hoping for a really funny joke or else a really nice history of mathematics including the achievements of many of the greatest mathematicians of all time.

Unfortunately I found the OP depressing :(
(Why? Because I'm a math teacher. "I have to teach WHAT?!"

oh no I whole heartedly agree... one language. I was jokingly implying only a native american language would work. As in, hell no to spanish as that second language. English only please. :)
