In a thread that's now closed that was about Pakistan, a posted linked to an issue about some history of the US and Africa.
I wrote a reply to that post, but since the thread was closed, can't post it there, but it's of interest as its own topic, albeit an unfortunately obscure one today.
It was a part of the world shift from European colonialism, to independence.
The history of Lumumba, the US, Eisenhower, JFK, is important and almost unknown in the US.
Here's an interesting article summarizing it - ignore the context of the site as assassination related, for this topic.
Lumumba played an important role in Kennedy's idea for supporting more independence over colonialism in Africa - directly at odds with the Dulles brothers, who had been Eisenhower's Secretary of State and head of the CIA under Eisenhower, and who continued as head of the CIA under Kennedy until forced by JFK to resign later.
Lumumba was tortured and killed three days before JFK was inaugurated, without his knowledge, on the orders of his soon to be CIA director Allen Dulles.
There's a good but hard to find out of print book about just this, "JFK: Ordeal in Africa":

Kennedy didn't learn of the assassination until the next month; the books's cover photo says it all, of JFK when he was informed. Another copy is here:
