I'm looking for recommendations on books regarding WWII in the Pacific theater. I'd like to find something that presents a good overview of the war in the Pacific. Any recommendations?

I've read just about everything by Stephen Ambrose, but his focus is on the European theater. If I could find an author who similarly wrote about the Pacific theater, I would much appreciate it.

TIA,

Samurai! - Saburo Sakai

Memoir of a Japanese Navy Pilot who begins his flying career in China and experiences the entire war. One of my favorite books.

Sounds good, I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy. I hadn't even thought about reading about the war from the Japanese perspective before. Intriguing!

I have the book... while it does cover in detail the pacific theater... It covers the entire war in chronological order. Since the pacific theater was only a small portion of the war and is spread out over time, there is not a specific section devoted exclusively to the pacific theatre in that sense... you may have to read several parts of several chapters to get that information.

Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors

by James D. Hornfischer

History of the Battle off Samar, during which a few DDs and DEs stalled the main Japanese battle fleet (Yamoto + co, out looking for the decisive battle) to protect a fleet of slow, poorly armed escort carriers.

They only lost one, and turned the fleet away. Amazing story, amazing book.

What aspect are you most interested in?
I know it was a huge operation, but it seems (at least to me) that the European theater has received much more coverage in terms of what has been written about it. If you go to the WWII history section of most major bookstores, the vast majority of books on the subject concern themselves mostly with the European theater. In my estimation, my local Barnes'n'Noble has a 20:1 ratio in books on the European vs. Pacific theaters.

I would like to read more about the various battles, strategic decisions, outcomes of those decisions, important figures, etc. A general synopsis of the Japanese domination of the Pacific in the late 30's thru Pearl Harbour and concluding with the surrender in '45 is what I'm after.

Stephen Ambrose wrote a book called Supreme Commander which was a biography of Eisenhower during his wartime career. If there was a similar biography on McAurthur, I'd be interested in reading something like that.
