Hissing/Crackling from onboard ac97!!!

Hey i ordered z680's (which come in tomorrow by the way ) but until then i am using some sony headphones. I have them in my AC97 onboard sound and i am always getting a hissing crackling sound. I have messed with all the options but it wont go away. I tried it on other headphones and still get same thing. Any ideas? I have newest drivers for ac97.

ac97 sux, if u can afford the z680's then surely u can afford a sound card like a turtle beach santacruz or Audigy 2

Here is my specs by the way:
P4 2.4B @ 3.1Ghz on LRWW with 688fsb
Abit IT7-Max2 v.2 with onboard ac97 audio
512mb OCZ Tech pc3500 ram
WinXP SP 1
Radeon 8500

Could it be the o/c of the fsb

And do you think i will tell that much difference from uping optical cable on ac97? Audigy 2 is just more money for me 2 spend unless it is drastically needed.

i put processor down to stock and it still hisses. I would get the santa cruz but it doesnt do its own audio processing right? It depends on the CPU to do so. But the audigy 2 has its own audio processor.

But i want to use optical and the audigy 2 doesnt have it i would have to get the platinum which i cannot afford.

If you use optical, I'm almost positive that the speakers then do the processing. Just get a decent card with optical out and you'll be fine. AC97 sux0rs my nux0rs and is famous for it.

Hey Cheeze, welcome to the forum!

suck it up and get the turtle beach, your 3.1 ought not have any probs handling some muzac

on board would be nice, but you can handle it.

I had to make the same disicion about my RAID card, but I dint have $300 to fork out for the Adaptec with onboard processing.

just curious, what are your timings/voltages?

My timing is 2.5 (i think that is what you wanted to know) and my voltage is set to 2.85 but on mbm it rarely ever even shows it going above 2.79.

And what is the best card with optical out?

The speakers are 5.1, i just want to get the best audio for the best price.

thanks for all the help so far.
