An interesting report about how Hispanics identify themelves.

I consider myself to be a Hispanic, Mexican-American, and white.

I dont know how it is in other states, but in Texas on your birth certificate if you arent black, or asian (not sure how mixed race works out) you are listed as being white.

In my particular neck of the woods Hispanics are the majority, and as such I dont think racism is really any problem.

I think that's because the government doesn't classify Hispanic as a race since you can have black Hispanics, white Hispanics, other Hispanics etc. I think they classify it more as a culture.

Isn?t the view that someone from Oklahoma with some Indian blood in him an Italian who?s got olive skin and a Mexican being of differing ?race? social construct more than anything you can link genetics to? Not just in the ?we?re all a human race? sort of way, but in the *black/white/Asian* race roots that anthropologists say are the systemic lines of humans.

Is an Italian white? is an okey white? are the Irish white?

and why do any of us care?

It seems that between 12,000 and 10,000 BC a new people, originating in the Caucasus, Southern Russian area (hence the term Caucasian) burst onto the historical scene.

These originally pastoral people - the first Caucasian, probably through over population and also our age all will to conquer and explore spread out in many directions.

Firstly South overunning the fertile areas which are now Iran and Iraq (Iran bears traces of the Aryan name). They founded the first real civilisation of Sumaria (Sumaryan) and conquered the mostly Semitic peoples they encountered.

They then moved into Egypt and the First Dynasty of Egypt was founded by the Caucasian Pharoah Menes. Another arm of the Caucasians moved East to China and even Japan. Last year, a whole group of typical Caucasian skeletons were unearthed in Mongolia! In Japan, the Caucasians are still represented by the
so-called "hairy Ainu", who remain apart from the Japanese.

India was then invaded and the flourishing Caucasian Indus Valley Civilisation established the early caste
system to prevent mixing with the native Dravidian population. They established the Hindu religion with its three castes of Priest, Merchant and Warrior.

Meanwhile, the Westwards expansion of the Caucasians found then over-running Europe and in Italy they destroyed the non-Caucasian Etruscan civilisation and founded Rome.

The front runners in Europe were the Keltoi (Celts), who swept through Gaul (France) and then into Britain and Ireland. It is a common fallacy that the Celts were small dark folk, they were in fact tall and either blond or red headed.

Greece was subject to invasions of waves of Caucasians - the Dorians, Ionians and Corinthians and the Greek civilisation established. They spread to Crete and built the Minoan civilisation.

In what is now modern Germany the Caucasian were very numerous and now jumping forward in time to AD49 we find tribe after tribe clustering on the banks of the Rhine waiting to cross as the river froze.
These Germanic tribes such as the Alemanni(all-men), Cheruscii, Belgae, Goths and many others were possibly in the millions and when they did cross the Rhine they overan Gaul. One tribe, the Vandals conquered Spain and then crossed to modern Tunisia.

Conquest and expansion which again leaping forward in time reached its apex in the 13th-16th centuries with the exploration of the world. Caucasians in tiny ships circumnavigated the world and discovered the New World (although the Viking, Leif Ericson landed there in the 8th century). /snip

I googled that but it might be a dodgy source I dunno about some of it but am too tired to look further tonight. interesting, a lot of unsettled white folk sounds like to me but it does imply that persians are white (like it matters)

Funny, as a kid I viewed myself as white, and my parents sort of let us lose our Spanish language because it was what we had to do to assimilate. We were middle class Democrats (dad was a fireman, mom a teacher).

Then I realized that I wasn't considered white by the white people. That's when I said no me jota and embraced my Latin identity.

For the record (and in response to the article), my family is now mostly upper middle class, highly educated (we count several Master's and a couple of PhDs amongs us) and mostly still Democrats.

Part of the problem with calling Hispanics a minority is the definition of Hispanic. What IS Hispanic?? The Surname? Persons claiming to be Hispanic are mixed race. The majority of Citizens of Mexico are Indian mixed. In parts of Central America in addition to the Indians, the Africans also added their gene pool in large quantities. Asian influence is strong in some regions as well (Especially near the Panama canal region). The Spanish peninsula was dominated by an African race for a century, and also was mixed with the other Euro-tribes for millenia. It is to the point where the world has to wake up to the fact that there aren't really many minorities any more, save aboriginal tribesmen, and even then, they are often mixed.

It's great to know your heritage, but I for one am very aware that even though I am NOT a WASP, I cannot claim to be a minority. Although my Surname is NOT Anglic, I have no true category, knowing that some of my ancestors were black, Irish, many French and others from regions that we could only guess at. I just check "White" on forms, and if they insinuate that I should put something other than "White", I put other.

I dont consider myself hispanic (although by generalizations I am). I am Puerto Rican first and foremost. I only "tick" the Hispanic box for the record for I have no other choices. Never considered myself white. In fact, Im a weird shade of light brown... jejeje. But I always joked about being black (Grandfather is black, grandmother white)... Then I moved to Florida a couple of years ago and had a black person call me whitey. I would have been insulted, but I guess I found the shock a little bit too funny for this one time.

I am having troubles deciding what to do with my son. My wife is like a 3rd generation Japanese, but considers herself "white" as shes never been to Japan, and doesnt speak the language, and the older relatives who pushed the traditions have been dying. Then me, who Im almost a rabid nationalist, having lived most of my life on the island, feel the need to teach my son about what I have grown to love, but he has not experienced it.

Etymology of the word Hispanic

Maybe we should drop the whole labeling altogether.

Yeah I live here in Texas too, and in Amarillo particularly the Hispanic population is growing rapdily, they are not quite a majority yet, but soon will be. Good I say. I think white whites should get to know their new neighbors, as they will be taking over someday in the not so distant future.

disclaimer: I don't like the title Hispanic. I didn't know what else to use, as not all are from Mexico, or Chile, or wherever. Latino does't really sound right either. Either way I apologize for the title.

I know what you mean. My mother is Danish/Blackfoot , and My father is Sioux. I somehow came out with blue eyes and bronze skin. People think I'm white.
