I was watching "Red Tails" and was appalled at the treatment of Black soldiers during WW2.

But, I was rather surprised to learn that Hispanics were integrated for the most part (except Puerto Ricans) into the US armed forces.

There were even Hispanic submarine commanders....High Ranking generals.....Flying Aces and so on. Can you imagine a Black man being a Submarine Commander? Unthinkable back then.

I knew they were integrated because of films and books about WW2. However, I had no clue at the level of integration.

Interesting read..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic_Americans_in_World_War_II

I haven't seen it, but I'm surprised blacks were even able to become officers in those days considering all the bigotry. (guessing only officers got to fly the planes) If you got a commission back in those days I'd wager you were the best damn most elite officers in the service.

What in the fuck.

My hispanic relatives (by marriage) always say that hispanic is not another "race". But theyre' also well off Cuban heritage folks, so maybe they just don't want to be associated with those brown people that speak their language.

Are you sure Red Tails is historically accurate? Isn't it merely "based" on a true story?

This. I suspect more hype than facts. From the previews of the movie they won the war all by themselves. Not to disrespect them, but ....

Eh, I'm going to have to disagree with you. My wife's relatives who were in Vietnam have the opposite opinion of you, and my relatives who either served during WWII or their friends (war vets) say the opposite also.

Disagree with who about what. Could you be a little more vague?

That's because Hispanic is an ethnic group consisting of people of many "racial" backrounds. That and the US people have had a relatively close relationship with those around us, a lot of which are Hispanic. We're all just people.

About Hispanics being as integrated as the OP is implying. While there are some who were fine, if your skin was darker (especially if tanned) then you got a lot of shit. I'm also not seeing many Hispanic names on the list of aces: http://www.acesofww2.com/USA/USA.htm

This. Native Americans were treated like shit too. If you were more Spanish Hispanic, you could go far. If you were Meso-American Hispanic: Good luck.

That is why I said Puerto Ricans were an exception. As we all know many Puerto Ricans were "darker colored" in skin tone.

However, you guys remember that movie "Midway" with Charlton Heston? EriK Estrada aka "Chili bean" character was a fighter pilot on an aircraft carrier fighting against the Japanese.

I also read war novels in the past that said certain officers and soldiers were of Hispanic decent with coffee colored skin? Kind of like Erik Estrada character in Midway movie.

My Grandfather knew some Hispanic officers and soldiers that served beside white soldiers in WW2. Some of them had the skin tone like Erik Estrada. Interesting indeed.

I will go on the record and say that for the most part....Hispanics for the most part were treated better than Native Americans, Blacks and Asian Americans in WW2.

That is all...

later guys...

Nothing private in this PM exchange, so I might as well share:

why did you do that? i don't get it.
The link explains why you should NOT see this movie. You're post about how you "have to see this movie" is either ignorant of the fact that it's a bad movie or "trolling" for a response like mine. Which is it?
sorry, my bad on my words.

my bad.

all i said is "i have to see this movie. ".
Right. If you were serious, then you obviously don't know how bad it is because you would NOT want to see this movie. If you were not serious, then you likely knew it was a bad movie and you were trolling for a response like mine. Because the latter was a possibility, I asked if it was "trolling" in my link to information about what a bad movie it is so that it would be clear that at least I know I am "feeding the troll" in that case. The link itself addresses the first scenario. I can't believe I'm having to explain this! :D
